Polaris
Here’s a mobile phone you carry with you every day that remembers the details of your daily life and features the ability to learn your tastes and habits. Like a capable personal secretary, it delivers essential information when you need it, wherever you may be and with whomever you may be talking. This isn’t just idle talk about the future—the concept underlying such a device is already here. Perhaps in the near future an entirely new mobile product will materialize right before your eyes!

Yes, it’s a mobile phone. But it’s also a robot with learning functions. In order to realize such a product, iida chose to partner with the emerging robotics firm, Flower Robotics, which has been a leader in the development of robotics that exhibit realistic interaction between society and technology, beginning with the manikin robot, “Palette.” Flower Robotics has introduced innovations that have made robots—which until now have evolved apart from people’s daily concerns—more realistic and enriching in ways that enhance our everyday lives. By integrating their shared vision with the culture of the mobile phone, iida and Flower Robotics are attempting to give these ideas a tangible form. The Polaris is a handheld device that not only embodies the unforeseen possibility of being a mobile phone, but, as its name suggests, it also bears the promise of serving as the compass for your everyday life.

For example, Polaris’ daily schedule manager monitors your physical condition, like an instructor, by recording walking distances in a database. It analyzes diet data and provides advice about your eating habits. Furthermore, depending on your physical condition, it introduces recipes and websites where you can purchase suggested organic produce and even information ranging from medical and exercise to business and entertainment recommendations. Polaris delivers each piece of information by customizing it in a manner optimized for your lifestyle. In short, it grows by learning more about your daily life, thereby becoming a stimulus and making your life ever more active. Polaris’ captivating design and direct connection to your everyday life deepens its bond with you. Its very existence enriches your sense of time and space. That’s the kind of mobile product we aim to develop. Even now, Polaris quietly awaits the chance to be brought to life.

Commercialization has yet to be determined.
